What Is Clean Room Ducting?

Clean room ducting, also stylized as cleanroom ducting, is used to distribute filtered air into a cleanroom. The ducts form a pipeline and are part of the cleanroom HVAC system, which removes airborne contaminants and manages the room’s pressure, humidity, and temperature. This results in a tightly controlled environment.

At SaintyCo, our clean room ducting systems come in a wide range of materials and configurations to suit your unique cleanroom setup. We offer integrated ducting for various filtration and air handling units in stick-built, hardwall, and modular cleanrooms. So, whether you need a small and simple or a large and complex system, we can design a solution for you. Ultimately, SaintyCo cleanroom ducting ensures leak-free and efficient airflow—for supply and exhaust—that’s tailored to your room class and application.

Laminar Clean Room Ducting
Laminar Clean Room Ducting

We offer several ducting options that support laminar airflow. Our ductwork achieves the unidirectional flow of air either vertically, from ceiling-mounted filter terminals to the floor, or horizontally, from wall to wall.

Turbulent Clean Room Ducting
Turbulent Clean Room Ducting

Our cleanroom ducting for turbulent airflow supports non-unidirectional air patterns, where filtered air enters and mixes with the space before being extracted. It’s ideal for cleanrooms that focus on dilution.

HEPA Filter Clean Room Ducting
HEPA Filter Clean Room Ducting

We provide ducting that’s built to integrate directly with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration units. These remove ≥99.97% of airborne particles ≥0.3 microns and are used in ISO Class 5 to 8 cleanrooms.

ULPA Filter Clean Room Ducting
ULPA Filter Clean Room Ducting

Ultra-low penetration air (ULPA) filter ducting provides a higher level of protection and captures ≥99.999% of particles ≥0.12 microns. This option is for super-clean settings in industries like nanotech and microelectronics.

FLEXIBLE VS SOLID

Which Type Of Clean Room Ducting Is Right For You?

The kind of ducting you need depends on your layout, ISO classification, budget, and goals. Our bendable ducts are perfect for tight or temporary spaces, whereas solid ducts are better for long-term efficacy in critical cleanrooms. We also offer hybrid systems that combine both types to benefit specific areas.

Flexible Clean Room Ducting

SaintyCo flexible ducting is popular in modular cleanrooms and temporary facilities. It’s made from super-light, anti-static materials that can bend around right corners thanks to a ribbed, soft design. So, it’s an ideal easy-installation choice for cleanrooms that require frequent layout changes or movement damping.

Rigid Clean Room Ducting

Our rigid cleanroom ducting systems are built for permanent installations. They’re solid, hard structures, usually made from metals like aluminum or stainless steel.

Though less versatile than flexible ducting, our rigid products are more durable and airtight. Their smooth interiors also improve airflow and make them easier to clean.

Testimonials

  • “I was recommended SaintyCo by a close industry contact so we decided to use them for our ISO 6 suite built in November just gone. They’ve been brilliant. I really appreciate their team working directly with our site contractor to resolve a sizing issue on the return path without delaying the project. The whole system went in cleanly and passed pressure tests on the first go. No drama (which seems to be rare these days). Will use again for cleanroom ducting on the new expansion floor.”

  • “Not much to say except it works perfectly and actually arrived on time. We ordered pre-fab supply/return ducting or a pharma BSL-2 room and it showed up literally on the day it said it would. Welds were clean. Fit was accurate. Not a scratch on any of it. Can’t say that for the last supplier we used!! We’ll be switching over to SaintyCo going forward.”

ISO Class 4 to 8 Clean Room Ducting

At SaintyCo, we engineer clean room ducting systems for the full spectrum of ISO cleanrooms. For example, we make ductwork for ISO Class 4 cleanrooms. These are also known as Class 10 as per the older Federal Standard 209E (FED-STD-209E). They require ultra-high filtration. On the other end of things, we also produce ducting for ISO Class 8 cleanrooms (or Class 100,000). Basic pacticulate control is sufficient in this category of facilities.

When you work with SaintyCo, we help spec and size the ducting system to match your cleanroom’s required classification. This helps you meet cGMP, FDA, EU Annex 1, and ISO 14644 validation standards. One of the benefits of working with us is that you’ll get access to some of the industry’s best engineers. Our experienced team will make sure your system supports the proper air change rates without overspending on unnecessary over-spec.

Round Vs Rectangular Clean Room Ducting

One of the most obvious differentiating factors between systems is their geometry. Both round (hollow cylindrical) and rectangular (hollow cuboid) configurations are common. But the right ducting for you depends on your layout, cleanroom classification, and project goals.

When comparing two rigid systems with smooth internal surfaces, round ducting provides better airflow efficiency due to its uniform shape which results in lower friction loss. It’s also easier to clean and less prone to dust or particle accumulation in corners. It’s stronger under internal pressure, which is useful for positive-pressure systems.

Rectangular ducting is ideal if you have tight ceiling spaces, as it allows for more air volume to be transported even in constrained geometries. To help reduce turbulence, you can include internal turning vanes. This shape is common in cleanrooms, corridors, and return air systems.

In reality, you don’t need to stick to one or the other. Many SaintyCo clients prefer a system that incorporates both round and rectangular clean room ducting. For example, round ducting for the main supply trunks and laminar terminals, and rectangular ducting for branch runs, corners, or tight mechanical rooms.
