Pharma Autoclave Applications

In the pharmaceutical industry, SaintyCo autoclaves are used for the sterilization of glassware, like vials and ampoules, and tools, like stainless steel scoops and trays. They’re also used to decontaminate rubber stoppers and closures before use in packaging. Workers’ protective clothing, like Tyvek suits, can also be autoclaved. Autoclaves are also an essential part of media preparation for microbiological testing or fermentation.

Pharma Autoclave

What Is A Pharma Autoclave?

A pharmaceutical autoclave, or pharma autoclave, is an industrial sterilization device. It uses time, pressure, temperature, and steam to kill microbial contaminants that may be present on pharmaceutical tools, equipment, packaging, solutions, and materials.

SaintyCo pharmaceutical-grade autoclaves come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations, and leverage different technologies depending on the model. But the general premise is the same. The items for sterilization are placed in the autoclave chamber. The door is locked and the purge phase begins, where air is replaced by steam, causing the temperature and pressure to increase. Steam is used because it’s more effective at thermal energy transfer than dry air. So, it can better penetrate porous materials and hard-to-reach areas.

The exhaust remains closed until the desired values are reached. This is when sterilization happens. Bacteria, pathogens, and spores are destroyed through protein coagulation. Finally, after the time set according to the load parameters, pressure is released and the contents of the autoclave can be carefully removed (though they will be hot).

SaintyCo pharma autoclaves are incredibly versatile. They can be used to sterilize many different materials. However, some chemicals (like acids and bases) and items made from certain plastics like polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyurethane should never be autoclaved.

Testimonials

  • “We mostly use the autoclave from SaintyCo for stopper batches and transfer scoops, probably 3 or 4 runs a days depending on what’s in production at the time. The drying cycle’s been a big help because we used to leave trays out overnight to air dry but now we can send them straight into the cleanroom which makes the whole process more efficient. I like how easy it is to use, our techs can run it after one quick training with no problems.”

    Magnus Veitch

  • “This autoclave replaced an older steam sterilization unit we had in the micro lab… what I like most is that it doesn’t need a direct steam hookup, we just fill the reservoir once in the morning and it’s usually good for the whole day then. Glass bottles are the main thing we sterilize but we also do some culture media in it and have saved a lot of time not having to babysit every cycle since the automation takes care of everything.”

What does the F0 value mean in pharma autoclave sterilization?

The F0 value refers to the number of minutes necessary to effectively kill microorganisms at 121.1°C (250°F). It’s used to compare and validate different sterilization cycles, so even if they run at different temperatures for different lengths of time, you can ensure they achieve the same level of microbial inactivation.

What are the critical parameters of a pharma autoclave cycle?

The critical parameters of an autoclave cycle are temperature, pressure, exposure time, and steam quality. Typical temperature settings include 121°C (250°F), commonly used for lab equipment, 132°C (270°F), used for borosilicate glass, and 135°C (275°F), often used for heat-stable pharmaceutical solutions.

At what temperature are items usually autoclaved?

Typical temperature settings for a pharma autoclave include 121°C (250°F), which is commonly used for lab equipment, and 132°C (270°F), which is generally used for borosilicate glass items. A higher temperature setting of 135°C (275°F) can be used for heat-stable pharmaceutical solutions.

Steam Sources

Our pharma autoclaves can create steam in various different ways using water from several sources. They can either have built-in steam generators (electric or steam-to-steam), or external steam connections for facility integrated systems.

Steam supply options include plant steam, clean steam, and pure steam. Plant steam is suitable for non-contact sterilization loads. These are things like wrapped tools and stainless steel components. It’s not suitable for direct-contact loads due to potential impurities.

Clean steam is generated from purified water (PW). It can be used to contact sterilization of things like stoppers, garments, and classwater. It can be delivered via central utility or an external generator.

Pure steam is produced from water for injection (WFI) which is used in critical applications like autoclaves in sterile injectables and biologics manufacturing.

Load-Specific Programming

You can easily program the specific parameters for each load, including pre-vacuum count and duration, sterilization temperature, hold time, ramp rate, exhaust method, post-vacuum drying tie, and jacket temperature.

Our advanced systems with PLC or SCADA interfaces enable multi-recipe storage and automatic cycle parameter logging for validation and audit readiness.

What are the three key phases of the autoclave sterilization cycle?

The sterilization cycle is broken down into three phases main phases. The first phase is purge, followed by the exposure phase, and finally the exhaust phase.

How much does a pharmaceutical autoclave cost?

The total cost of your order depends on factors like machine model, spec, and quantity, as well as your shipping location. Please contact us and we’ll happily provide you with a free and accurate quote.

How are gravity autoclaves and vacuum autoclaves different?

In SaintyCo autoclaves with a gravity cycle, air is displaced by steam and removed through the natural force of gravity. Systems that use a vacuum pump are faster and more effective, but tend to have a higher cost.

Can you accommodate custom autoclave requests?

Yes, we always try to accommodate custom requests, whether you want a specific feature, unique configuration, or added functionality. Please contact us directly so we can tell you how we can help.
